The book I am reviewing is ‘Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters’ this book is set in the 21st century in America.
There are 4 main characters in the book. Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood and Tyson who has only just been introduced in this book.
Percy: In this book he is portrayed as being a good-natured, friendly, brave and loyal. He is always willing to risk his life to save his friends and family. He learns that he is not the only son of Poseidon and that his father has a lot more including some monster children. After finding this out he feels embarrassed to be related to a monster. When he is in certain life threatening situations he sometimes does things without think and gets into a lot of trouble.
Annabeth is portrayed as a great strategist, full of wit, very intelligent and strong (Most inherited from her mother Athena). In difficult situations she is a quick thinker providing a great deal of help in his quests and mostly saves their lives.
The book starts off about teenage school life and how he is being bullied because he hangs out with a ‘freak’. He feel uneasy about the fact that he is an Olympian hero but just a normal boy in the ‘mortal’ world. All throughout the book he is constantly fighting and getting into trouble. In the novel the most important piece/scene in this book is when they find and bring back the Golden Fleece. It is told in Percy’s point of view (what he is thinking, what he sees etc…).
One of the most important relationships in this novel is between Percy and his brother. There is conflict in the fact that Percy is embarrassed to be related to a monster. But he finds the benefits and feels less embarrassed and more proud.
This book is about loyalty to friends and family, the abuse of godly powers and the conflict between family and friends.
I quite enjoyed this book and I think that the series so far for me is really exciting, I got stuck into it as I like greek mythology. The ending was not what I expected and I really made me want to read the next one.
